Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno mocinno de la Llave) are considered as one of the most beautiful birds on earth (refs.) due to its plumage and way of flying. through the years it represented a cultural symbol, its feathers were used as ornaments for Mayan and Azteca’s kings and queens and it was named náhuatl as “Quetzalcoatl” which means serpent bird. Quetzal is Guatemala´s national bird with which Guatemalans are more identified. Its habitat is in the mountains with presence in cloudy forest from Chiapas in Mexico to west Panama. The present study had as purpose determine viability of Quetzal population handling in the remaining area in the fores of Cahabón river inside Renace I and Renace II hydroelectric.
To determine viability ecological niche models were used along with Maxima Entrophy (MAENT) algorithm (Phillips, Anderson, & Schapire, 2006), through this algorithm it was determined if there exist abiotic conditions on the forest remains of the high part of Renace I. Then it was determined if there were any nutritious plants inside the already mentioned remains and 17 species of nutritious plants were found. Therefore it is concluded that this site has adequate conditions. It has been seen that Quetzales can move up to 60 km. (Paiz 1966). It is considered that actually there are no Quetzales in the forest remains due to its´ isolation and they travel to high perturbation places only if there is food available and through small sections. Finally it is recommended to stablish a biological corridor involving key social actors that promote environmental, social and economic environment in the region.
In Renace we act under a pollution prevention focus through control and monitoring of our operations to reduce and/or eliminate environmental impact.
Besides, we work to conservate and regenarate the biodiversity of the influence area
In the Axis or Environmental importance we implemented projects focused in adaptation to the climate changes. Such projects contribute to environment recuperation and conservation, as well as to improve agricultural practices in the influence zone communities.
The main programs are:
- National Strategy of Quetzal Conservation
- Agricultural excellence
o Strengthening of crop: corn, beans, coffee, cacao and cardamom.
o Family market gardens establishment
o Permaculture
o Crops diversification
- Basin reforestation
- Philanthropic Tourism
At Renace we are committed with the environment beyond applicable agreement. To achieve our conservation objectives we have implemented diverse programs, among them: Reforestation Program, Environmental Education Program, Cleaning and ornament Program, among other activities. As part of the implementation of best practices, at the Hydroelectric Complex Renace we made a fauna and flora monitoring of the species that are around all projects.
Read about founded species:
Renace is oriented to the respect of National Applicable Rules which includes the compliance of mitigation measures proposed at the environment impact study, of the requirements of its approving resolution and else in force legislation. To assure effectiveness of the strategy we have an air, noise and water quality monitoring program.

Complejo Renace I Y II
Como parte de las mejores prácticas, el complejo
Hidroeléctrico Renace realiza un monitoreo faunístico y florístico de
las especies que pueden ser encontradas en los alrededores de sus centrales
Renace I y Renace II.
